David and Goliath is one of the most well-known fables in the world . It tells the story of David ,the youngest of eight brothers and his victory over the 3-metre giant, Goliath. Jiu jitsu warriors associate this fable with the struggles between athlete of the light and heavy divions. However, competitions are not the only place this happens; there are many instances in life when we are put in the shows of little David. Oops, we meant little Enzo Botinelly, gray stripe and, son of Professor Elton Castro GB Roriama -BR.

Only 4-years old Enzo had his first battle against a different opponent off the mat – known as lymphoma. Lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymph, which are responsible for producing cells that trigger the immune response of of the human body. Although it was our little champion who was sick it was Enzo’s father who suffered more. The black belt contemplated giving up Jiu Jitsu altogether, but it turned out to be the mats that came to give his son the extra strength to fight on and keep on wearing the kimono. In Taking Care of Your Mind feature today we proudly bring you, a story of victory and fellowship of the dynamic duo, Elton and Enzo .

In 2009, Enzo Botinelly was diagnosed with lymphoma. It came as a shock to Elton and his wife Marcela , who had big plans for their first-born son, believing him to be healthy and happy. Things started looking even grimmer when they learnt that Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima didn’t offer any possibility for the adequate treatment of young cancer patients. We had to leave our jobs and family and move to Brasilia DF to be able to help him. He was almost four when he was diagnosed and this year he’s turning eight, said Elton Castro.

The GB Professor actually started contemplating giving up jiu jitsu. “I had been practicing since 1995 with master Pascoal Duarte who had taught me a lot. And all the while the gentle art had always been part of my life. My wife, whom I met in 1999 at a competition in Manaus -AM and most of my friends were from the circles of this sport. Pedro Galiza, Brasilia, was the one who gave me the strength to return to the mats and show that training could be used at that time as an escape valve to strengthen my body and my mind. It worked! Said Elton.

There was a time when I feared for the outcome of Enzo’s treatment was uncertain. I was scared, I cried, we passed through tough times together, but I never stopped believing it would all work out in the end. “ Complete Elton

Today , Enzo trains 3 times a week and already has many titles such as: Macuxi Cup Champion 2012, Vice Champion Roraimense 2013 and Vice Champion of the 2013 Open Roraima. The next objective of this champion in life is to fight and stand out in the Amazonense Championship Jiu- jitsu and Pan Kids in California. Again, the formula: Gentle Art + LOVE + FAITH , resulted in a very strong bond of friendship between father and son. In the case of these two, the roles were reversed ,the lesson has been passed from son to father.

The main lesson that I learnt is that even in the darkest moments of our lives we can still find the strength to smile and be happy .

Challenges such as this one are difficult to live through and require much more than technique and strength in training. They require a lot of mental strength, calamity and willpower to be able to move on, overcoming the obstacles on the road to victory. Today, Elton Castro and his wife help the Roraima Institute to Combat Childhood Cancer ( ICCI RR ) which tends to more than 160 children, with the delivery of food baskets, holiday celebrations , aid in early diagnosis and treatment Away from home ( TFD ) and so on. It is very rewarding to see the smiles of these little warriors who have already been through so much said Elton.

Jiu jitsu makes us stronger as fighters and as people. It often helps us overcome the adversities in life, but we need to always remember to:

1 THINK POSITIVE: As Grand Master Carlos Gracie said Think only about the best, work only for the best, and always expect the best.”

2 – CULTIVATE WILL POWER: Know your weaknesses so you can find the motivation to NEVER give up. You are capable! Fight for the things you want!

3 UNDERSTAND THE OBSTACLES OF LIFE: Nothing is easy. Obstacles are part of the road to the realization of our dreams . View them as part of the way to victory.
